How to Obtain a Replacement Number Plate

To replace your number plate, you must visit a registered number plate supplier. This process requires certain original documents to verify both your identity and your entitlement to use the registration number.

Required Documents for Verification

**To Verify Your Name and Address:**
- A valid driving license.
- A recent utility, Council Tax, or rates bill (within the last 6 months).
- A bank or building society statement (dated within the last 6 months).
- A national identity card.

**To Verify Your Name Only:**
- A passport (does not need to be UK-issued).
- A bank or building society debit or credit card.
- A police warrant card.
- An armed forces identity card.

Demonstrating Entitlement to Use the Registration Number

You need to provide one of the following documents to prove your right to display the registration number:
- Vehicle registration certificate (V5C or V5CNI).
- The green ‘new keeper’ slip from the V5C or V5CNI.
- Certificate of entitlement (V750 or V750NI) to the number.
- Retention document (V778).
- A renewal reminder for vehicle tax or SORN (V11 or V11NI).
- Temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI).
- A number plate authorisation certificate (V948) with an official DVLA stamp.
- An electronic number plate authorisation certificate (eV948 or eV948/2).
- A letter of authorisation from a fleet operator (including lease or hire company) quoting the document reference number from the registration certificate. If your fleet is part of the new V5C on demand scheme (also known as ‘V5C suppression’), a PDF of the vehicle’s details from the "view vehicle record" service.
- UK trailer registration certificate (VTRC).

By following these guidelines and providing the necessary documentation, you can seamlessly obtain a replacement for your number plate from a certified supplier.
